howcasing the impact of ASA's interventions in bringing prosperity to the small holder farmers
ASA with the support of Lutheran World Relief worked with 500 women farmers in 25 villages of rural Bihar State, India, to increase their economic and food security. Using innovative farming practices, ASA is helping them diversify their crops by increasing creating small scale water harvesting structures and making provision of equipments to transfer water to the fields thus improving production of cereals and pulses and introducing high yielding vegetable crops, sell vegetables at local and regional markets for increased income and organize into a farmer producer organisation, giving them better access to services and support to sell and grow their crops. The project outcomes are captured in this video.
Lack of access to water to irrigate the fields is one of the most distressing problems for smallholder farmers in rural India. With the provision of reliable source of water like a simple dug well can provide year-round water and breaks the cycle of poverty. Farmers are able to improve and increase their crops, generate greater incomes to sustain their families, thereby removing the need to migrate to cities in search of work.
